Better Suburbs - Places and Spaces - Ryans Road, Nundah
Council is revitalising the neighbourhood precinct at Ryans Road and Robinson Road, Nundah.
Council has released a final improvement plan to renew this neighbourhood precinct in Nundah.
Improvements will include:
- upgrades to the intersections of Ryans Road, Robinson Road and Thomas Street, including line marking and minor kerb and traffic island realignment
- new on-street accessible parking bay
- provision of a new crossing point on Ryans Road and the upgrade of three existing pedestrian crossing points
- new turf areas, garden beds, waterwise landscaping and street shade trees
- street lighting upgrade
- new unique seating and standard Council street furniture, including a drinking fountain, bike rack and bins
- integration of natural environment themed creative pavement designs
- removal of 4 street trees and 12 on-street car parks, in the streets surrounding the new public open space.
This project forms part of Council’s Better Suburbs - Places and Spaces (BSPS) public realm improvement program which remains committed to creating a city of vibrant neighbourhoods.
In late 2023, Council invited the local community to share their ideas and local knowledge of the precinct and wider neighbourhood.
Feedback assisted Council in developing the proposed concept design, which was released in June 2024. Between 10-30 June 2024, we gathered community feedback on the proposal during in-person and online engagement activities.
Council held a community event on Sunday 16 June outside the local shops at 130 Ryans Road, Nundah. The local community enjoyed family-friendly activities and were encouraged to share their feedback on the proposed concept design as well as speak with the project team. You can view our community event image gallery.
We received positive feedback from online engagement, with over 79% of respondents indicating either ’strongly support’ and ’support’.
Thank you for sharing your feedback and support on the proposed concept design. Your feedback along with further detail design investigation informed the final improvement plan, which was released in early 2025.

Road closure
As part of this project, a road closure is required under Section 75 of the City of Brisbane Act 2010. The section of road to be closed by Council is a no-through slip lane for vehicular traffic located in front of 130 Ryans Road, Nundah. The closure will be effective from Monday 28 April 2025, weather and site conditions permitting.
The closure of this section of road will not impact vehicular traffic at the intersection of Ryans Road and Robinson Road, Nundah. We will be maintaining access via the existing roadway and standard intersection with left and right turn movements.
Start of construction
Works are expected to start from Monday 28 April 2025 and be complete in late 2025, weather and site conditions permitting. To minimise impact to local businesses, the majority of construction activities will take place at night. Night works are scheduled between 7pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday works when required. Retail and commercial amenities will remain open to visitors throughout construction.
We will provide advance notification of any particularly impactful works required throughout the construction period.
What to expect during construction
During the works, residents and businesses near the neighbourhood precinct may at times experience:
- increased noise, truck movements, low level vibration and dust
- light from mobile light towers and flashing vehicle lights (during night works)
- changes in traffic conditions, including minor traffic delays, reduced speed limits, temporary road and lane closures.
Council will make every effort to minimise impacts to the local community. Traffic management and signage will be onsite to direct people walking, riding and driving through the area. Please note, due to workplace health and safety requirements, reversing beepers cannot be switched off.
We value your patience and cooperation while we complete these works.
Site compound
To minimise traffic and on-street parking disruption, the site compound and laydown area to store materials and machinery will be established within the grass verge on Railway Parade, Nundah and reinstated at project completion.
