Learn how to regrow spring onions at home easily in soil or water. Keep a fresh supply of this versatile vegetable on hand with simple steps and minimal effort.

Spring onions (also called 'green onions' and 'scallions') are a versatile, onion-flavoured ingredient for cooking. Use them to enhance Asian dishes (including stir fries), salads, savoury pancakes, and omelettes.

Instead of letting store-bought spring onions go to waste in your vegetable crisper, learn how to easily regrow them at home.

Why regrow spring onions?

Regrowing this edible vegetable at home is not only economical but also convenient. By doing so, you’ll always have a fresh supply on hand. Just like herbs, you can snip off what you need as you go, ensuring no food waste.

How to regrow spring onions in soil

1. Prepare your materials

Buy a bunch of spring onions from the grocery store or market. You'll also need a pot and some good quality potting mix.

2. Cut and plant

Trim the stalks to about 2-3 centimetres from the root. Use the remaining stems and leaves in your cooking. Plant the root pieces in the potting mix, ensuring a bit of the stem is visible above the soil. Place the pot in full sun.

3. Care for your spring onions

Water regularly and allow them to grow. Once mature, snip the stalks at the base for your cooking. The roots will regrow around 4 times before you need to start the process again. Optionally, you can let one or more spring onions flower and produce seeds for collection.

How to grow spring onions in water

1. Prepare your setup

Cut the spring onions about 2-3 centimetres from the root. Place the root-end in a small jar filled with water.

2. Position and maintain

Place the jar in full sun inside your home or on a balcony. Keep the roots submerged in water and change the water weekly. Trim for your cooking as needed.
