What happens to Brisbane's waste?

The Brisbane landfill site in Rochedale accepts waste that can’t be recycled or reused from the
resource recovery centres, including general waste collected from kerbside red-lidded bins. This waste is taken from the disposal area at each resource recovery centre to the landfill site.

We recognise the impact that waste can have on the community, environment and economy and
the consequences of improper disposal of waste, especially hazardous waste. We’re committed to creating a cleaner, more sustainable city.

We are a proud producer of green energy

By harnessing the methane gases that come from landfill, we can convert what would otherwise become emissions into renewable electricity.

Brisbane landfill produces around 65,000 megawatt hours of green energy annually, which is enough energy to power up to 11,500 homes every year.

This is helping us work towards a cleaner, more sustainable Brisbane.

How we manage waste at Brisbane landfill

Waste that can’t be recycled or reused at Council’s resource recovery centres is compacted for transportation to the landfill site in Rochedale.

Waste is again compressed before being placed into cells within the landfill structure. The cells are lined with thick clay and high-density polyethylene plastic, creating a barrier between the waste and the natural environment.

Once a cell is full, it's capped with clay similar to the base of the landfill, before being topped with a thick layer of soil. Finally, it's resurfaced with turf, bushes and trees.
