About the project

We are planning for a potential future bikeway between the Western Freeway Bikeway and the University of Queensland (UQ). This corridor could connect to the Indooroopilly Riverwalk, an important active transport link for the area.

We are now investigating options to extend this connection between Carawa Street, St Lucia and Moggill Road, Indooroopilly.

There are three sections to this potential future bikeway, which are at various stages of design development, including from:

  • Carawa Street to Indooroopilly Riverwalk
  • Indooroopilly Riverwalk to Western Freeway
  • Western Freeway Bikeway to Moggill Road.

This project is jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.

Why is my feedback important

We want to understand your experiences when riding or walking through this area, including how, why and when you travel between Carawa Street, St Lucia and Moggill Road, Indooroopilly.

This is part of our planning and design process to deliver safe active transport and improve active travel options for residents, students, visitors and commuters.

Your feedback will help us better understand your travel through the area and any opportunities or challenges you face along your route. Community feedback will be considered alongside technical inputs to help inform any potential improvement options.

Project details

The Indooroopilly Bikeway will:

  • provide a safe, connected and accessible active transport connection between UQ and the Western Freeway Bikeway for people of all ages and abilities
  • improve accessibility to the Riverwalk, local shops, parks, shopping centres and public transport at Indooroopilly and St Lucia
  • provide more active travel opportunities for families and students by improving connectivity to local schools
  • create a continuous east-west link from the Western Freeway through to Woolloongabba.

About the Indooroopilly Bikeway

The potention future Indooroopilly Bikeway will provide a safe, connected and accessible active transport connection between the University of Queensland and the Western Freeway Bikeway. It addresses a significant gap in active transport infrastructure through the western suburbs of Brisbane.

The Indooroopilly Riverwalk was the first stage of this connection and has improved safety, comfort and amenity by providing a separated two-way cyclist and pedestrian riverwalk that takes advantage of the Brisbane River outlook.

We are now investigating the next stages of this potential future bikeway, between Carawa Street, St Lucia and Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, via Lambert Road and Witton Road.

Map supporting information

The map is an aerial view facing north and shows a possible future active transport link between the Western Freeway Bikeway and the University of Queensland.

Existing active transport connections are depicted by a green line, which includes the Western Freeway Bikeway, Indooroopilly Riverwalk, and St Lucia Esplanade Bikeway.

'To Darra' is marked in green at the bottom left, while 'To City' is marked in green at the top right.

A blue line with two-way arrows connects Moggill Road in Indooroopilly to Carawa Street in St Lucia.

The study area is shaded blue and covers Witton Road, Lambert Road and a section of Indooroopilly Road, between Lambert Road and Carawa Street, as well as nearby streets. The University of Queensland is highlighted in yellow.

The map legend features a maroon train symbol for Indooroopilly train station and an orange school symbol for five schools within the project area: Ambrose Treacy College, Indooroopilly State High School, Brigidine College, St Peter's Lutheran College, and Ironside State School.

Why are we investigating this route?

Lambert Road and Witton Road are part of the Queensland Government’s Principle Cycle Network Plan, which means they are prioritised for future active transport improvements. These streets follow an existing desire line for cyclists and improve connectivity to major destinations such as public transport, schools and urban precincts.

This bikeway would improve accessibility to local shops, parks, recreation facilities and public transport at Indooroopilly and St Lucia.

It would make it easier and safer to travel between the Western Freeway Bikeway and the University of Queensland (UQ). This connection would also provide more active travel opportunities for students and families by improving access to schools in the area, including Ambrose Treacy College, Brigidine College, St Peter’s Lutheran College, Indooroopilly State High School and Ironside State School.

This connection would fill a critical missing link in the broader cycling network by providing a direct and connected route from the CBD to western suburbs and would create a continuous east-west link from the Western Freeway Bikeway through to Woolloongabba and beyond.

Next steps

We are currently in the planning and design phase, with next steps dependent on future allocation of funding against city wide priorities.

We will provide an update to the community as projects progress.
