About the project

Between 2017 and 2021, there were 7 reported crashes at the Melton Road and Nellie Street intersection with 2 of these crashes requiring hospitalisation. Most of the crashes at the intersection were caused by people turning with small gaps in the traffic due to extended delays at the intersection and limited visibility with the current on street parking.

The upgrade will involve installing a pedestrian refuge on either side of Melton Road, at the intersection with Nellie Street to improve safety and enhance pedestrian connectivity at this busy intersection.

The no stopping lines on all approaches to the intersection will be extended to facilitate the new pedestrian refuge and to increase sightlines. This safety upgrade forms part of Council’s plans to make Brisbane roads safer.

The project is funded by the Australian Government as part of the 2024-25 Black Spot Program.

Project details

  • Realigning the kerb and constructing new pram ramps and sections of footpath on all four corners of the intersection.
  • Extending the no stopping lines and removing some informal on street parking spaces to improve sight lines for road users.
  • Installing additional stop signs on both sides of Nellie Street.
  • Installing new landscaping and line marking.

Project benefits

  • Improve safety for all road users by improving sightlines at the intersection. This feature will provide safe connectivity for pedestrians moving about the intersection and make it safer for cyclists and motorists travelling through the intersection.
  • New pedestrian refuge islands on Nellie Street at both approaches to Melton Road will make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road.
  • Upgrading kerb ramps and sections of footpath and installing new pram ramps to enhance safe connectivity for people walking and riding through the intersection.
