If your antenna is more than 10 metres above the natural ground surface, you’ll need building approval.
Contact a licensed building certifier to organise building approval.
Check if you need building approval to install an aerial, antenna, flagpole, mast or tower. Lodge certification documents.
Aerials, antennae, flagpoles, masts and towers are regulated under the Building Act 1975.
This means you’ll need building approval in some situations.
You don’t need planning approval for aerials, antennae, flagpoles, masts or towers.
You can erect a non-load bearing aerial, antennae, flagpole, mast or tower outside of Brisbane Airport’s obstacle limitation surface without building approval.
The device must be:
detached from a building or structure and not more than 10 metres above natural ground surface
attached to a building or structure and is not more than 3.5 metres above the building or structure.
If your aerial, antenna, flagpole, mast or tower doesn’t comply with these guidelines, you’ll need building approval.
Structures that don't need building approval still need to comply with relevant building codes and standards.
Contact a licensed building certifier for advice and to organise building approval, if required.
Under the Planning Act 2016, Council must hold records of building construction approvals and certification information. These documents will be kept for a specified period of time and made available for inspection.
A detailed list of required lodgement materials is outlined in Planning Regulation 2017 and s86 of the Building Act 1975.
You can lodge building certification documents online for a fee of $72.30.
Sign in to the Services Brisbane for Business portal to lodge your building certification documents.
You can also lodge building documents at any Customer Centre. Phone Council’s Business Hotline on 133 BNE (133 263) to ask about the fees for lodging building documents in person.
