Story Bridge restoration project

Council has recently completed the first full restoration of Brisbane’s famous Story Bridge.

We would like to thank the community for their patience while this important work has been undertaken.

Find out how the restoration will prolong the life of this iconic Brisbane landmark.

The Story Bridge is a vital link in our city's road network, carrying around 100,000 vehicles across the Brisbane River every day.

While the bridge has received continuous maintenance over the years, this has been its first full inspection and restoration.

We undertook this project to:

  • maintain the bridge’s structural integrity
  • improve its appearance
  • keep it safe and accessible for all users.

Works included:

  • installing a scaffolding system encapsulation system
  • recoating steel members (blasting and painting)
  • concrete repair and strengthening works.

Stage 1 (completed)

  • Works involved the restoration of the below deck steel on the bridge’s southern approach, between Baildon Street and Wharf Street.

Stage 2 (completed)

  • Works involve the restoration of the below deck steel on the southern approach to the Story Bridge, between Wharf Street and Holman Street.
  • Works between Wharf Street and the bridge pier started in mid-August 2021 and continued on Holman Street.
