Government, peak body and industry resources and support for community organisations

This page includes a list of Queensland and Australian Government departments, peak body and industry providing advice, information and resources to assist community organisations, and in some cases training and education opportunities.

Government organisations

Australia Council for the Arts

The Australia Council for the Arts is the Australian Government's arts funding and advisory body. It provides the cultural and arts sector with research information, practical resources, education and industry development programs, online webinars, and grants and funding advice.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)

The ACNC is the national regulator of charities in Australia. It is responsible for registering organisations as charities and helps charities understand and meet their obligations through information, guidance, advice and other support.

Fraud and financial crime can be reported to the ACNC for investigation.

Australian Cyber Security Centre

The Australian Cyber Security Centre provides advice and information about how to protect your organisation from cyber threats.

Australian Sports Commission (ASC)

The ASC is the Australian Government agency responsible for supporting and investing in sport at all levels. It focuses on getting more Australians participating and excelling in sport by:

  • delivering key programs in line with the Australian Government's sport policy objectives
  • providing financial support and other assistance
  • building collaboration, alignment and effectiveness within the Australian sport sector.

Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

The ATO provides help for not-for-profit (NFP) administrators including a not-for-profit newsroom,  induction package for new administrators, handover checklist, self-governance checklist and information on NFP obligations and requirements.

You can ring the NFP helpline on 1300 130 248 from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Blue Card Services

Clearinghouse for Sport

The Clearinghouse for Sport is the information and knowledge sharing platform for Australian sport. It brings together Australia's leading sport and active recreation agencies - using Sport Australia as the principal information coordination point - to share news, evidence and insights about sport, human performance and physical activity. It connects sports people with complementary expertise and facilitates the exchange of information and knowledge across the sport sector. Membership is free and allows you to access a knowledge base and resources.

Community Door

Community Door is managed by the Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS) and funded by Queensland Government and is a resource and information hub for Queensland's community services sector.

Queensland Fire Department (QFD)

QFD provides guides and information sheets about building fire safety, smoke alarms and relevant legislation. It also offers resources such as templates and checklists for emergency planning and undertakes on-site fire safety audits and equipment checks to ensure compliance.

Queensland Government - Department of Housing

This department includes community support services to help improve the social wellbeing of people and create thriving Queensland communities. It provides funding and grants for community organisations.

Queensland Government - Department of Resources

This department is responsible for land and property including managing state land (including leases and permits to occupy), processing property registrations and providing advice on vegetation management.

Queensland Government - Department of Tourism and Sport 

This department empowers Queenslanders to enjoy physical activity to improve their health and wellbeing in active communities. Find out more about their investment in sport, including funding and grants, industry resources, sport initiatives, information for volunteers and coaches and more.

Queensland Government - Office of Fair Trading (OFT)

The OFT is the state government body responsible for managing the incorporation of not-for-profit organisations. It also provides guidance and advice about how to start and run an organisation and closed one down. It also outlines the financial responsibilities for incorporated associations.

Queensland Government - Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR)

OLGR provides guidance and information about liquor and/or gaming licensing in Queensland, including training and education opportunities and application forms.

Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU)

QUU supplies drinking water, recycled water and sewerage services to South East Queensland. Contact QUU for billing information, to report faults and plumbing problems and find out about service interruptions.

Peak bodies and industry

Active Queenslanders Industry Alliance (AQIA)

AQIA is the service delivery arm of the peak bodies for fitness, sport and active recreation in Queensland.

Australian Sports Foundation

The Australian Sports Foundation helps Australian sporting clubs and individuals raise funds for their sport.

Clubs Queensland

Clubs Queensland provides connections and resources for community clubs across Queensland on education, government representation, training, hospitality and gaming.

Community Services Industry Alliance (CSIA) 

CSIA collaborates and partners with industry, government and stakeholders in the community services industry to create, test and implement evidence-based, system-level solutions.

Connecting Up

The Connecting Up program supports Australian and New Zealand not-for-profits to build stronger communities through the use of technology including discounted computer software and hardware.

Good Sports 

Good Sports is a free Australia-wide program run by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation that is committed to building strong communities and limiting the harm caused by alcohol and other drugs. It provides training for community sporting clubs on topics such as alcohol management, mental health, smoking, drugs and sport, drink driving and safe transport, and role modelling good behaviour. The program helps sporting organisations to promote healthier, safer and more family-friendly environments which can help strengthen club membership, boost participation and support organisational integrity and sustainability.

Indigenous Sport Queensland (ISQ)

ISQ is a non-profit incorporated organisation that aims to promote and advocate for Indigenous sport in Queensland.

Irrigation Australia Ltd

Irrigation Australia is the peak national organisation representing the irrigation industry. It provides irrigation specialist contact details, resources, training workshops and nationally accredited courses.

Justice Connect

Justice Connect is a not-for-profit social justice organisation and community legal service that collaborates with other organisations to provide legal help.

Multicultural Australia

Multicultural Australia in partnership with the Australian Government and Welcome Sports delivers the Connecting Through Sport program to connect communities and provide opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to meet, play and share experiences.

Outdoors Queensland

Outdoors Queensland is the peak body for the outdoors and outdoor activities in Queensland.

Good Jobs

Good Jobs, an enterprise of ourcommunity.com.au, provides free resources for community organisations who employ staff and want to improve their human resource practices and policies.

Institute of Community Directors Australia

The Community Finance Centre was established by ourcommunity.com.au and is proudly supported by the Commonwealth Bank. It provides not-for-profit organisations access to tools and resources to help improve financial management.

Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA)

PLA is the leading association for professionals in the parks and leisure sector and supports the industry through events, training, conferences, advocacy and research.

Play by the Rules

Play by the Rules is a nation-wide program that provides information, resources, tools and free online training to increase the capacity and capability of administrators, coaches, officials, players, parents and spectators to assist them in preventing and dealing with discrimination, harassment, child safety, inclusion and integrity issues in sport.

Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS)

QCOSS is Queensland's peak body for the social service sector advocating and leading policy development, connecting communities, members, sector, other peak bodies, government and business and collaborating with stakeholders to create social change.

QSport

QSport is the representative body for organised, affiliated sport in Queensland and is accepted by government as the state's industry peak body for sport.

Sports Community

Sports Community provides information, resources, training and knowledge to sports organisations and their volunteers throughout Australia.

Sports Medicine Australia (SMA)

SMA is the peak body for sports exercise and medicine, sports injury, physical activity, and sports exercise and science in Australia.

Sports Turf Association Queensland (STA)

STA offers a network of turf grounds managers involved in managing sports and passive turf facilities in Queensland and provides turf information and training opportunities.

Volunteering Australia

Volunteering Australia is the national peak body for volunteering, working to advance volunteering through advocacy and policy development, research, information, stakeholder engagement and communication.

GoVolunteer

GoVolunteer, an initiative of Volunteering Australia, is a national service that aims to match people who are interested in volunteering with appropriate volunteering opportunities and organisations who are seeking assistance.

Volunteering Queensland

Volunteering Queensland is the state peak body dedicated to advancing volunteering for the economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being of Queensland. It provides information on volunteering services and training.
