Active School Travel - Car pooling
Many cars travelling to and from school only carry one family. Car pooling will save time and money, and will reduce traffic at the school gate. RACQ estimate a medium sized car costs an average of $240 a week to run, so car pooling with families from your area and school is one way to save on fuel and car maintenance costs.
Talk to your friends and neighbours to find opportunities for car pooling – it’s as easy as asking someone if they are going your way. Car pooling can contribute to cleaner air for our city and is another way families can travel to school every day as part of the Active School Travel program.
Meet Carsha
The Active School Travel character, Carsha is all about sharing her ride. She and her friends live a bit far away to walk to school, so their parents take turns driving them all to school, and Carsha and her friends play games on the way. She knows that one car at the school gate is better than three!
Carsha's Top Tips for travel
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Don't distract the driver.
- Be sure to hop out on the footpath side, away from traffic.
- Organise your friends in advance when carpooling.
