About traffic management

The Brisbane Metropolitan Transport Management Centre (BMTMC) ensures your journey on our roads is safe by monitoring and managing accidents and incidents, 24 hours a day.

The BMTMC is an alliance between Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads and has 3 sections.

The section manages incidents on all roads and:

  • provides traffic control, monitors traffic flow and roadworks
  • manages traffic around public events
  • tows broken down vehicles on motorways.

The Network Coordination Centre provides real-time incident management and support to bus drivers and buses across Brisbane.

Translink’s Busway Operations Centre monitors Brisbane busways and stations and provides real-time management of safety and security incidents.

Traffic incident response units

The BMTMC also works with Traffic Response Units (TRUs) to keep our road networks clear.

TRUs help keep our roads moving by providing 24/7 on-road incident assistance.

TRUs provide a range of support to motorists. They’re equipped to:

  • offer basic roadside assistance

  • divert vehicles around traffic accidents and breakdowns

  • remove dangerous obstacles from the road

  • provide fuel, water and minor mechanical repairs to cars that have broken down.

TRUs work closely with emergency services and provide real-time traffic intelligence to the BMTC.

TRUs are a joint initiative of Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, and delivered by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ).
