About the project

Council is actively managing the climbing facilities at the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs through monitoring and regular maintenance to ensure safe facilities are provided.

We have an ongoing program to inspect, maintain and replace the climbing bollards and anchor points at the top of the Kangaroo Point cliffs to ensure we are providing safe climbing facilities for the community to enjoy our liveable city.

A total of 18 climbing bollards have been removed and replaced as part of this program and we are now planning the next round to remove and replace.

We are also working to replace unauthorised ring bolts in the stone wall at the top of the cliffs. Council does not endorse the safety or reliability of these points and until replacement works occur, climbers are strongly advised to use the marked Brisbane City Council bollards for top roping and abseiling set ups. Climbers who chose to use alternative anchor points do so at their own risk.

Ring bolt replacement

Council is installing new, certified ring bolts in the bedrock at the top of the cliffs. These new certified ring bolts will replace existing ring bolts that have been installed by the community in the stone wall and concrete footing at the tops of the cliffs. Council-installed ring bolts will ensure we can certify their strength and suitability to an appropriate safety standard for climbing.

To ensure all groups can use this recreational space safely, we will be removing these existing ring bolts and installing new ring bolts in the bedrock at the top of the cliff.

Construction

Works to remove and replace anchor points in the stone wall at the top of Kangaroo Point cliffs will take place in mid-March 2025 for up to 3 weeks, weather and site conditions permitting.

Our work will be completed in small sections at a time, moving along the cliff wall from Joey’s café towards the nursery cliffs. Exclusion zones will be set up around these small sections at the top and the base of the cliffs as we progress, to minimise impacts to users. The new ring bolts will remain fenced off for one day after installation to allow for curing time before being opened to the climbing community.

Climbing bollards and the cliff face outside of these zones will remain operational during the works.

Throughout the works, you can also expect temporary footpath closures at the top of the cliffs where ring bolts are being replaced.
