Latest update

Thank you to everyone who explored the 2 new concept design options, reviewing the features, benefits, and considerations of each design, before completing the online survey to vote for your preference.

We received majority support for Design A, which includes a raised speed platform. This platform, designed to accommodate boat trailers, will slow the speed of motorists entering the Manly precinct via Cambridge Parade to improve safety for all road users at this intersection.

The project team will now undertake any technical investigations required to finalise Design A.

About the project

We are proposing to make changes at the Cambridge Parade, Melville Terrace and Arnold Street intersection to improve safety for people walking, riding and driving.

Community consultation held in late 2023 and again in late 2024 confirmed the preferred design includes a raised speed platform, designed to accommodate boat trailers, to slow the speed of motorists at this intersection.

The design also includes informal car parking spaces along Cambridge Parade, between Melville Terrace and Stratton Terrace being formalised into 30 spaces with line marking.

While budget to construct the improvements will be considered against other city-wide priorities, the project remains high on Council’s priority list.

More information about timeframes for construction will be shared once budget is confirmed.

Benefits

The proposed improvements at this intersection aim to introduce the below benefits.

  • Improve safety for people walking and riding by achieving better motorist compliance with the 40km/h speed zone by installing new coloured road markings or a raised platform that is designed for vehicles pulling boat trailers and heavy vehicles.
  • Enhance visibility and safety for people walking, riding and driving by removing select on-street informal car parking spaces.
  • Formalise 30 on-street car parking spaces on Cambridge Parade, between Melville Terrace and Stratton Terrace with new white line-marking.

Past community engagement

Brisbane City Council released a consultation plan in late 2023 and invited the community to have their say on a proposed design to improve safety for all road users at the Cambridge Parade, Melville Terrace and Arnold Street intersection. Feedback received during the consultation phase confirmed a lack of support from the community for some elements of the proposed design.

The project team considered this community feedback and developed 2 new concept design options. In late 2024, Council invited the community to review the features, benefits, and considerations of the 2 new options before voting for their preferred concept design.

Next steps

The project team will now undertake any technical investigations required to finalise Design A.

A final design and construction are dependent on future budget allocation and city-wide priorities.
