About the project

The Lindum rail crossing is managed by the Queensland Government (the rail line) and Brisbane City Council (the roads). The Australian Government, the Queensland Government and Council are working closely to deliver safety improvements at the level crossing through a phased solution.

We delivered initial safety improvements in late 2021 and have recently taken key steps forward to progress to the next phase of the design. As part of ongoing technical investigations, we are working closely with service providers to resolve complex public utility relocations.

Council and the Queensland Government have recently agreed to a land swap which will create space to make necessary safety improvements at this intersection. We are currently formalising this agreement.

We want to thank everyone who provided feedback on the preliminary design released in February 2024, either by attending the community information sessions or contacting the project team. Please view the project update newsletter which provides a summary of the feedback we received and how this is being considered.

Sibley Road improvements

As part of the upgrade, we are proposing additional improvements on Sibley Road to improve safety and enhance connectivity to Lindum Station for people walking and riding.

These improvements have been incorporated into the overall project design and include the project features listed below.

  • Widening the footpath on the northern side of Sibley Road and installing ramps for better connection to the Lindum Station and throughout the precinct.
  • Installing a raised pedestrian crossing on Sibley Road to connect to new footpaths.
  • Narrowing access to Malabar Street and Rodney Street off Sibley Road to reduce the speed of motorists.
  • Installing no stopping lines on sections of Sibley Road to enhance visibility at new crossing points.

Please refer to the Sibley Road improvements project plan for more information.

Community feedback

Council held two community information sessions in late February 2024 to share the preliminary design with the community. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the design, either by attending the community information sessions or contacting the project team.

A summary of the feedback we received and how this is being considered can be found in the recent project newsletter released to the community in early October 2024.

As we continue to progress the design, we are always open to feedback and encourage the community to get in touch to raise issues, ask questions or sign up to receive regular project updates

Project details

  • Realigning the intersection layout to the west of the existing open level crossing, to achieve a perpendicular crossing. This improved geometry will make it safer and easier for road users to travel through the area with improved sightlines and visibility.
  • Installing traffic lights on the roads that neighbour the level crossing to control all traffic movements through the crossing.
  • Installing controlled pedestrian crossing facilities on Lindum Road, Sibley Road and Kianawah Road.
  • New controlled, dedicated pedestrian crossing facility at the open level crossing.
  • Removing the right-turn from Sibley Road into Kianawah Road to further improve safety for road users.
  • Installing a U-turn facility on Kianawah Road so those travelling westbound on Sibley Road can access Lindum Road and North Road.
  • New shared paths and footpaths on Lindum Road, North Road, Kianawah Road and Sibley Road to improve active transport connectivity.
  • On-road bike lanes on Kianawah Road southbound and Lindum Road northbound.
  • New yellow box line marking and road surface.
  • Installing new drainage, pavement, line marking and minor landscaping.

Please refer to the preliminary design for more information.

Project benefits

Realigning the intersection and installing traffic signals will improve safety for all road users and enhance traffic flow through the level crossing. New signalised crossing facilities and upgraded footpaths will improve connectivity for active transport users.

Funding

The Lindum rail crossing upgrade is funded by the Australian Government, the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council, with construction subject to funding.

The Queensland Government in partnership with the Australian Government and Council, investigated solutions including separating road from rail with a road overpass. Delivery of a grade-separated overpass in this location remains a longer-term consideration.
