Hosting the Games
Discover what we’re doing to prepare for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Council's role in hosting the Games
Council is working with all levels of government, organisations and the community to prepare our city to host the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
To prepare the city, we are:
- completing major park and transport projects, including Brisbane Metro, the Bridges for Brisbane Program and the Victoria Park / Barrambin transformation
- planning traffic management, crowd movements, local venue operations, waste services and more
- protecting Brisbane’s enviable subtropical lifestyle by ensuring long-term benefits for the city in the lead up to, during and after the Games.
Our progress so far
Since securing the Games in 2021, Council has worked with our Games delivery partners on strategic planning, structure and governance.
Together with our key partners, we’re delivering significant social and economic benefits for the local community.
City planning and other initiatives
We've forged ahead with city planning, undertaking initiatives and achieving recognition in 4 key areas.
The 'New Norm' approach
The Games will be delivered under the International Olympic Committee’s ‘New Norm’ approach, which:
- promotes using existing sports infrastructure and only building new facilities if they offer long-term sport and community benefits
- allows more flexibility in planning and design, ensuring the Games are affordable, beneficial and sustainable.
Games delivery partners
Council is working with key partners to deliver the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
They include:
- the Australian Olympic Committee
- Paralympics Australia
- South East Queensland councils
- the Queensland Government
- the Australian Government
- the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee.
The Games will be funded by Brisbane 2032 through ticket sales, sponsorships and corporate partnerships, with all three levels of government funding vital infrastructure needed for the growing region that will be used for the Games.
How we got here
Brisbane’s journey to hosting the Games began with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games proposal in 2015.
Council worked with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (SEQ) to develop the proposal. Together, we investigated hosting the Games as part of the long-term planning and economic development for our region.
In 2021, Brisbane was announced as the Host City of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since then, we’ve been working with our key partners to ensure the Games bring about lasting benefits for Brisbane and its residents.
Hear Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner talk about the Brisbane 2032 Games and the economic, community and sporting legacy of this milestone.
This is such a history-making moment for Brisbane.
There are literally thousands of cities and towns across the globe and only a handful have ever become Olympic cities. Brisbane has become one of the few cities on earth chosen to host the world's biggest sporting event. We've started our coming of age as a truly global city and once a city becomes an Olympic city, it's always an Olympic city.
Six years ago the mayors of South East Queensland came together with a common aim and a common purpose. Their aim was to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games right here. My friend and predecessor, Graham Quirk, started this journey and I've been so excited to take the baton and run with it as the Chair of the Council of Mayors.
Our purpose was to seek an amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our region and for our city. We made the decision to go for gold. Gold for our economy, gold for tourism, gold for our transport network and gold for jobs. This will be a golden age for Brisbane and a golden age for Queensland.
We're a sports loving city in a sports loving nation, but this means so much more than just the sports. The Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide a 10-year green and gold runway to 2032 and at least a decade-long legacy following the Games.
Brisbane will benefit from jobs, tourism, trade and an estimated 8.1 billion dollar boost to the Queensland economy. It will inspire a young generation of people and supercharge sport participation in Queensland and right across Australia.
We now have more than 10 years to prepare for the 2032 Games and deliver city-shaping projects like the Brisbane Metro, new green bridges, Victoria Park and so many other projects to create a better connected region.
The International Olympic Committee's decision is a massive vote of confidence in Brisbane and in our region. We already live in the best part of Australia and the Olympics will ensure that it gets even better.
