Night safety

Brisbane City Council encourages the safe enjoyment of the city’s entertainment precincts and works with State Government and licensed venues toward providing safe public spaces at night.  There are a number of things you can do to ensure your own safety when enjoying a night out on the town.

Personal Safety

Taxi safety

Taxi rank safety is a shared initiative between State and Local Government.

There are seven secure taxi ranks in Brisbane city for ordinary taxi services, and four dedicated to the NightLink FlatFare Taxi Service.

The seven secure taxi ranks for ordinary taxi services are located at:

  • Treasury rank (corner of George and Queen Streets)
  • Albert Street rank (corner of Albert and Elizabeth Streets)
  • Edward Street rank (Edward Street approaching Elizabeth Street)
  • Eagle Street rank (Eagle Street outside Friday's Nightclub)
  • McWhirters rank (Wickham Street outside of McWhirters)
  • Ann Street rank (Ann Street outside Katmandu)
  • Caxton Street rank (Caxton Street outside the Caxton Hotel)

The four dedicated NightLink FlatFare taxi ranks are located at:

  • George Street (at head of Treasury secure rank)
  • Eagle Street (at head of Eagle St secure rank)
  • Edward Street (at head of Edward St secure rank)
  • Warner Street in Fortitude Valley (approaching Wickham Street)

Secure taxi ranks are staffed by experienced taxi rank marshalls and security guards, and in some locations ‘City Safe’ CCTV surveillance is in place.

At a secured taxi rank, patrons can expect:

  • to queue in an environment that is free from unruly and inappropriate behaviour
  • an organised supply of taxis to the rank to meet demand
  • management of the flow of passengers and organisation of share rides as required
  • answers to enquiries about routes and fares
