Brisbane’s beautiful natural reserves, mangrove-lined creeks and iconic river create plenty of opportunities for water-based exploring.

Cruise down the Brisbane River, hook a whiting at Deep Water Bend or kayak past saltmarshes in Boondall Wetlands.

Make the most of our city’s waterways and outdoor lifestyle using ramps, fishing platforms, moorings and other facilities.

Brisbane River Access Network

The River Access Network provides locals and visitors with different ways to enjoy and explore the Brisbane River.

The network is made up of 8 river and recreation hubs that support lifestyle and tourism opportunities on the river.

River hubs

River and recreation hubs provide access to and from the Brisbane River for recreational and tourism watercraft, including:

  • tour boats and water taxi pick-up and drop-off
  • powered recreational vessels, including boats and jet skis
  • passive vessels such as canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. 

Recreation hubs are suitable for short-term use by recreational and passive vessels.

The River Access Network includes eight locations across Brisbane.

Before using a hub, make sure you check its size capacity and the weight of your vessel.

New Farm Park River Hub

Location: New Farm Park, 137 Sydney Street, New Farm.

Waterway access information: External side of the outer pontoon is intended for use by commercial and tour boat vessels of up to 200 tonnes. Inner pontoons are intended for passive and recreational vessels of up to 25 tonnes.

City Botanic Gardens River Hub

Location: City Botanic Gardens, 147 Alice Street, Brisbane City

Waterway access information: External side of the outer pontoon is intended for use by commercial and tour boat vessels of up to 200 tonnes. Inner pontoons are intended for passive and recreational vessels of up to 25 tonnes.

Murarrie Recreation Hub

Location: 55 Metroplex Avenue (no 55) Park, 55 Metroplex Ave, Murarrie.

Waterway access information: Suitable for vessels up to 75 tonnes. Access the hub via a shared path through Metroplex Avenue Park, behind the Brewdog complex.

Waterway access information: Suitable for vessels up to 75 tonnes.

Dutton Park Recreation Hub

Location: Dutton Park, 359 Gladstone Road, Dutton Park.

Waterway access information: Suitable for vessels up to 75 tonnes.

Northshore Hamilton Recreation Hub

Location: Northshore Riverside Park, 305 Macarthur Avenue, Hamilton.

Waterway access information: Suitable for vessels up to 75 tonnes, single pontoon

Kingsford Smith Drive Recreation Hub

Location: Kingsford Smith Drive Recreation Hub, 402 Kingsford Smith Drive, Hamilton.

Waterway access information: Suitable for vessels up to 300 tonnes. Access the hub via Lores Bonney Riverwalk.

Riverhills Recreation Hub

Location: end of Sumners Road, in Newcomb Park, Riverhills.

Waterway access information: Pick-up and drop-off for commercial vessels up to 25 tonnes. Launching and short-term use of passive crafts such as kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards

The facility allows users to stay for a period of up to two hours, unless otherwise signed by Council. The facility is suitable for vessels up to 25 tonnes.

Fishing is currently allowed on the pontoon, however, boating activities take priority. Cast nets and crab potting are not permitted on the pontoon to ensure the safety of all users.

City Botanic Gardens River Hub

Located near Brisbane's original botanic gardens, the City Botanic Gardens River Hub caters to a range of vessels and uses, including:

  • pick-up and drop-off points for tour boats and water taxis
  • short-term use for powered and passive vessels.

Using the river hub 

Follow the rules when using the hub.

  • Users of the inner fingers of the pontoon can stay up to 2 hours. No bookings required.
  • The inner pontoons are intended for recreational and passive vessels of up to 25 tonnes. 
  • The external side of the outer pontoon is intended for commercial and tour boats of up to 200 tonnes. 
  • Pre-booked tour boats can stay up to 30 minutes to pick up and drop off passengers. To pre-book, submit a docking request application.
  • No overnight mooring is allowed.
  • Fishing is allowed off the pontoons, but boating activities take priority. Net casting and crab pots aren’t allowed.

Riverwalk

The City Botanic Gardens Riverwalk is a shared riverside pathway that provides access to the City Botanic Gardens River Hub.

The riverwalk extends from the City Reach Boardwalk, at the corner of Alice Street and Edward Street, to Bunya Walk within the botanic gardens.

New Farm Park River Hub

The New Farm Park River Hub offers access to New Farm Park and Brisbane Powerhouse via the Brisbane River.

Water safety

Access the Brisbane River from a ramp or rest at a pontoon along the water’s edge.

Launch and retrieve your boat, canoe, kayak or other vessel from a ramp along Brisbane’s waterways.

Take a quick break from your paddle at a pontoon or landing (other than ramps and hubs).

Breakfast Creek boat moorings

There are moorings at Breakfast Creek for long-term boat storage.

You must request permission to moor your boat at the creek.

There are 16 mid-stream moorings at Breakfast Creek.

The mooring fee at Breakfast Creek is $161.15 per month.

Dinghy storage is an additional $7.27 per month, subject to availability.

You must pay all fees in advance, after receiving permission (Casual permit is issued).

You must have permission to moor at Breakfast Creek.

1. Before you apply

  • Understand your fees.
  • Read important mooring information.
  • Prepare your supporting documents:
    • ship master’s or recreational boat operator’s licence
    • photo identification (if not incorporated in the licence)
    • vessel registration certificate (where registration is required by law) 
    • Certificate of Currency for Public Liability Insurance of at least $10 million.

  • We’ll review your application and supporting documents.
  • If successful, we’ll send you an invoice for the mooring fees.
  • You must follow the conditions of your permit.

Mooring facilities

There are 16 mid-stream pile moorings at Breakfast Creek.

There are no onsite toilet, shower or laundry facilities.

Owners use the moorings at their own risk. Council gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the adequacy or safety of the mooring, berthing facility or anchorage.

Tidal flows

The Brisbane River and major tributaries, including Breakfast Creek, have an ocean tidal flow of up to 2 metres every 11.5 hours.

Note

  • Breakfast Creek can have a current flow of up to 4 knots.
  • Mooring fore and aft can be challenging in anything but a slack tide.

Height limit

The Breakfast Creek moorings are upstream of the Breakfast Creek Bridge, near Newstead House.

Note

The minimum clearance at the Breakfast Creek Bridge is 2.8 metres at the highest possible tide, and less during flood events.
