Keeping Brisbane moving

Link copied

Find out how we’re improving Brisbane’s bus network with more services to more suburbs, more often.

Investing in our bus network

Council has reached an agreement with the Queensland Government to increase funding for Brisbane buses to keep our city moving.

Under the agreement, an additional $75 million will be invested into our bus network during 2024-25. Ongoing funding will be spilt between the Queensland Government (75%) and Council (25%) in future years.

This investment will help us create a more frequent and reliable bus network and expand services to new suburbs.

How this investment will improve our bus network

More responsive network

With funding that grows as our city does, we can enhance the frequency and reliability of the bus network to meet your changing needs.

More bus services

A demand-responsive bus network means more buses, more often to meet expected increases in service needs. This includes extra bus services to support 50 cent fares.

More travel choices

Reshaping our bus network will result in better connections to rail and ferry services, giving you more options for a faster and more reliable journey.

Launch of Brisbane Metro

The first phase of Brisbane Metro will deliver metro services on the M1 and M2 routes. Permanent services officially commenced on the M2 route on 28 January 2025, with future expansions being explored.

Ongoing network improvements

Council and the Queensland Government will conduct annual bus network reviews, starting with Brisbane’s northside bus services.

A better deal for Brisbane

Investing in high-quality public transport is the most effective way to keep our city moving.

We’re delivering the public transport the people of Brisbane deserve while connecting you with the people and places you love.

Together with the Queensland Government, we’re delivering a better deal for Brisbane’s future.

Our agreement will enable us to:

  • expand Brisbane’s bus network to new suburbs

  • meet the demand for services to support 50 cent Brisbane bus fares

  • collaborate with the Queensland Government on annual bus network reviews to identify improvements and changes in demand.

As part of Brisbane Metro, we’ve introduced a new fleet of high-frequency, high-capacity turn-up-and-go services for our growing city.

Permanent metro services officially commenced on the M2 route (UQ Lakes to RBWH) on 28 January 2025. This was alongside new school services and 8 route changes as part of Brisbane's New Bus Network roll-out.

We’ll work with the Queensland Government to explore the expansion of Brisbane Metro to more destinations, including:

  • Carindale and Capalaba

  • Chermside and Fitzgibbon

  • Brisbane Domestic and International Airport.

In Brisbane, buses carry two thirds of total passengers, leaving the rail network underutilised in many parts of the city.

With support from the Queensland Government, we’re reshaping our bus network to complement rail connections. This multi-modal network will also improve connections to our ferry and e-mobility networks, as well as improved public and active transport options.
