About the Toowong to West End Bridge

The Toowong to West End Bridge will make it easier to walk or ride between West End and the Toowong Centre, rail and ferry services.

The bridge will:

  • include dedicated pathways for walkers and riders, with a minimum width of 6 metres and accessible grades
  • generate new and upgraded riverside parks
  • improve access to high-frequency bus and rail services
  • create faster, more convenient connections between work, study and lifestyle precincts.

Community consultation for the bridge began in 2019, with a concept design released in 2021.

What’s next?

Planning for the Toowong to West End Bridge was paused to prioritise Brisbane's rebuild and recovery efforts following the February 2022 flood and weather event.

In response to the ongoing impacts of the global inflation crisis on Council's projects and services, planning for the project will remain paused.

We are seeking funding from the Australian Government for a business case for the Toowong to West End Bridge, which will require support from all 3 levels of government to proceed.

If funding is secured, we will consider progressing the detailed design and procurement process to ensure the bridge can be delivered sooner than anticipated.

We recognise the positive level of support for the Toowong to West End Bridge and have acquired the land necessary for the proposed Toowong landing at 600 Coronation Drive, confirming our commitment to deliver the bridge once funding is secured.

Improving transport connections

The Toowong to West End Bridge will provide a vital cross-river link for people walking or riding for fun, fitness or transport.

The bridge will feature 2 high-quality landings at 600 Coronation Drive in Toowong and Orleigh Park in West End.

The project will:

  • link West End locals to shopping, businesses and health facilities in Toowong
  • enable commuters to interchange at Toowong railway station and Regatta ferry terminal
  • provide access to high-frequency bus services in West End and South Brisbane
  • give Toowong locals direct access to markets, entertainment and greenspace in West End
  • better connect existing active travel routes, such as the Bicentennial Bikeway to Riverside Drive in West End
  • reduce reliance on private vehicle trips and decreases vehicle emissions.

Toowong to West End Bridge fly-through

See the bridge come to life in the concept video.

The fly-through video shows an aerial view of the Brisbane River from Toowong with the Brisbane CBD.

Labels highlight these areas, with the Toowong to West End Bridge located on the left of the video. The fly-through then transitions to an aerial view of the concept design of the bridge separately, to show the proposed landing areas.

The fly-through finishes on the same shot from the beginning as the video fades out.

Engaging with the community

We collaborated with the local community and stakeholders to create the vision for the Toowong to West End Bridge.

Following initial consultation in 2019, we completed a detailed analysis of the feedback received and prepared an initial outcomes consultation report.

In November 2020, a shortlist of bridge alignment options was released for community feedback.

In November 2021, we unveiled the bridge’s concept design. Residents, businesses and other stakeholders all had their say on the design as part of our community engagement events.

There was support for the:

  • bridge to be made a priority project
  • overall concept design and proposed bridge form
  • new riverside park and plaza space at the Toowong landing
  • plaza to be integrated into the existing park and pathways at the West End landing.

We’ll keep you informed as the project progresses and provide more feedback opportunities in the future.
