Use extra time to seek shelter

Residents at risk from storm surge and flooding should use the additional time available from the slowing progress of Tropical Cyclone Alfred to seek alternative shelter.

The latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology is that Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now expected to make landfall later on Friday 7 March or early Saturday 8 March.

Council has opened a temporary Refuge Shelter for residents needing to leave their properties due to the cyclone impacts at the RNA Showgrounds, 600 Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills.

If required, two more temporary Refuge Shelters will open tomorrow (7 March) at:

  • The Chandler Arena, Sleeman Sports Complex, 757 Tilley Road, Chandler
  • Kedron Wavell, 21 Kittyhawk Drive, Chermside

Make sure you check current alerts and road conditions, plan your journey, and check Council's website for shelter updates.

The temporary Refuge Shelters will be short-term facilities designed to protect people during the predicted peak wind period of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and are a place of last resort.

These facilities include only basic amenities and will not have beds, cooking facilities or food provision.

Residents attending any of the three temporary Refuge Shelters will be requested to fill in registration forms upon arrival.

Residents attending temporary Refuge Shelters should consider bringing the following:

  • non-perishable food
  • any essential medication
  • essential personal documents.

Please note that pets are not allowed at the temporary Refuge Shelters.

Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire Department, Queensland Ambulance Service and Council staff will be present at the shelters.

Do not drive through floodwater and avoid parking under or near trees, creeks and drains. Reconsider your journey if driving conditions become too dangerous.
