About the project

This project is part of Council’s City Botanic Gardens Master Plan 2015. The rehabilitation will ensure a consistent and high-quality parkland experiencewithin the heart of the city.

Rehabilitation works will be conducted on Oakman’s lagoon next to the Alice Street entrance. These works aim to improve water quality, reduce water wastage and maintain this asset for future generations.

Works will include:

  • emptying the pond by gradually pumping out and recycling water over the park vegetation and lawns
  • desilting the lagoon
  • inspecting and repairing cracks
  • trimming invasive tree roots
  • installing a new sand bed and pond liners
  • repairing and reinstalling the aeration and fountain system
  • refilling the lagoon with water.

Prior to construction and during works, a fauna spotter and catcher will be present to catch and relocate all aquatic life within the lagoon.

Investigations

To prepare for the rehabilitation, Council will be trialling some works in late January 2025. These works will take place between 6.30am and 5pm and will take approximately 1 day to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

Traffic control will be onsite to assist people moving through the area with detour signage in place. The local community may see workers and machinery onsite and notice an increase in noise, dust and truck movements.

The garden gates will remain open with an exclusion zone near the lagoon and on Alice Street. We will temporarily occupy a portion of the Bus Stop 95A bus zone on Alice Street with no operational disruptions to the timetabled services.

Council will make every effort to minimise disruption to park users and the wider community during these works.

Next steps

Rehabilitation works will start in early 2025. We will provide another update with more information about construction impacts and timing before works begin.
