Kangaroo Point Bridge construction
Brisbane City Council has appointed Connect Brisbane, led by BESIX Watpac, to design and construct the Kangaroo Point Bridge.
Connect Brisbane is a consortium of bridge design, engineering and construction specialists led by BESIX Watpac, who are head officed in Brisbane, and include Rizzani de Eccher, WSP, Dissing + Weitling, Blight Rayner, ASPECT Studios, Right Angle Studios and Rowland.
The consortium’s experience spans global and local projects including Perth’s signature Matagarup Bridge and Dubai’s landmark Water Canal Bridges.
Connect Brisbane will source more than 90 per cent of construction supplies and materials from South East Queensland businesses, with more than 300 local jobs and up to 50 apprenticeships created to provide a much-needed boost for our local construction industry.
As part of the project, Council is also delivering new walking and riding connections from the bridge landing at Scott Street through to Main Street and Deakin Street in Kangaroo Point.
Construction activities are now underway for the Kangaroo Point Bridge, including the Main Street and Deakin Street connection, with the project expected to be completed in 2024.
Construction updates
Connect Brisbane is responsible for managing impacts related to construction of the Kangaroo Point Bridge and keeping the community informed for the duration of works on the project.
Council is delivering the Main Street and Deakin Street connection separate to the main bridge works carried out by Connect Brisbane.

Construction overview
Council will work with Connect Brisbane to minimise construction impacts on the local community, where possible. While many construction activities will be undertaken from the river, work sites have been established at:
- C.T. White Park (off Hamilton Street) and Scott Street in Kangaroo Point
- the corner of Alice and Edward Streets, near the City Botanic Gardens in the CBD.
Initial works commenced in late 2021 and included:
- pre-site establishment works and investigations including dilapidation surveys, locating services, noise monitoring and the establishment of an off-site fabrication yard
- relocation of park infrastructure and utilities
- establishment of work sites
- diversion of pedestrian and cycle pathways, with safe access maintained through the construction areas.
Major works commenced in early 2022, with the Kangaroo Point Bridge expected to open to the public in 2024.
Main Street and Deakin Street connection
To facilitate construction activities for the Main Street and Deakin Street connection at Kangaroo Point, Council has established a site compound and lay down area for materials and equipment in C.T. White Park.
The site compound will be utilised for the duration of the project, with the Main Street and Deakin Street connection expected to be complete in the first half of 2024.

Late 2021
Start of initial works, including site establishment and service relocations.
2022
Start of major works in the river including piling and bridge pier construction, and works at the bridge landings.
Mid-2022
Start of construction of the Main Street and Deakin Street connection.
2023
Works in the river to construct the bridge piers, bridge deck, viewing areas, mast and cable stays.
2024
Main Street and Deakin Street connection complete. Final fit out of bridge, dining venues and landings, and bridge opening.
Working in the river
Connect Brisbane has established a marine construction zone to provide a safe working environment for construction of the bridge. From early 2022, marine barges will facilitate construction activities in the river.
Many of the bridge elements will be preassembled off-site and transported by water for installation, helping to reduce impacts on the local community.
A tower crane will also operate from a temporary platform in the river, close to the City side, to assist with construction of the bridge.
In consultation with Marine Safety Queensland, the speed limit in the river near the marine construction area has been reduced to six knots during construction for safety reasons.
