Figs are vital keystone species in tropical forests, providing essential food for frugivores like fruit bats, primates, and birds. Evidence suggests figs were among the first plants deliberately cultivated by humans. Widely used around the world, figs owe their diversity and success to a unique relationship with tiny wasp pollinators. This mutualistic partnership ensures the reproduction of both the fig tree and the wasp, contributing to their global spread. Discover the fascinating world of figs and their ecological importance on a journey through the City Botanic Gardens. Guided walks are led by City Botanic Gardens Volunteer Guides. Requirements: This walk requires average physical activity, including walking distances up to 500m, possibly some uneven ground but mainly paved paths. Stops are short and mainly for guide explanations. Some short standing periods or sitting if required. Please wear a hat, enclosed walking shoes, and be sure to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Meeting point: Meet at the Visitor Information Kiosk (next to the Queensland University of Technology's Main Drive pathway). Cost: Free Age: Suitable for ages 16+ Venue: City Botanic Gardens, 147 Alice St, Brisbane City QLD 4000 Note: Walks may be subject to environmental conditions and guide capacity on the day.
