Advertising devices

An advertising device is a temporary or permanent sign, structure or other device used for advertising. It includes a structure, or part of a building, if its primary purpose is to support the sign, structure or device.

The following are not advertising devices:

  • an umbrella, marquee or portable shade structure that is used for the purpose it was designed and manufactured for
  • advertising displayed on a vehicle or vessel where the advertising is not the primary use of the transportation
  • skywriting or sign-writing by an aircraft
  • official traffic signs installed in accordance with the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995.

If you are planning to display advertising devices for your business, home business, club, charity or garage sale there are rules that apply and you may need approval from Council.
