Virtual Brisbane

Virtual Brisbane is an innovative, computer-generated, three-dimensional (3D) model of urban development activity in Brisbane. It plays a vital role in helping Brisbane City Council plan for our city’s future growth.

The technology enables the visualisation and analysis of development in relation to the existing urban environment. It provides a level of detail not previously possible.

Welcome to Virtual Brisbane – Brisbane City Council’s computer-generated 3D model of the city. Keep watching to learn how this innovative technology helps Council plan for our growing city.

Virtual Brisbane is a spatially accurate and interactive 3D model of the city’s CBD and inner-five kilometres.

It allows Council planners to analyse proposed developments and planning scenarios in greater detail and make more informed decisions about how our city grows.

By animating a proposed development in Virtual Brisbane, our planners can view it from an unlimited range of aspects including ground level, mid-height and birds-eye views.

We can vary the time of day and assess the impacts of height, orientation and design on the surrounding area.

We can also consider other scenarios like adding extra parks and trees to support new development and test what impacts development might have on local infrastructure networks.

Planning tool for Brisbane’s future

Council uses Virtual Brisbane to assist with its strategic planning, development assessment and community engagement. Benefits of the model include:

  • assisting with decision making on proposed development by providing visualisation in a realistic 3D context
  • built-in impact assessment tools such as shadow impacts and object measurement helps to analyse height, orientation and design of proposed development and their cumulative impacts on the surrounding area
  • streamlines the process of planning and 3D visualisation with scenario modelling and analysis throughout the development of planning policy
  • video fly-throughs and virtual reality experiences which help communicate planning policy and strategies.
