Sustainability initiatives

Brisbane City Hall participated in the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star Public Building Pilot as part of its restoration aiming to achieve a 4 Green Star rating for the building.

Saving water

An 80,000 litre underground water tank for toilet flushing and irrigation has been installed.

Energy consumption

Energy consumption in City Hall has been reduced by:

• re-wiring heritage light fittings and replacing bulbs with low energy bulbs
• using occupancy sensors on light switches
• installing an energy efficient air conditioning system
• resealing windows to control building temperature
• installing solar panels on the roof.

Indoor environment quality

New materials such as insulation, carpets, adhesives, sealants and paints are all low volatile organic compound emitting.

Building design

A number of original design features of City Hall help it achieve greater sustainability including:

• the thick outer layer of sandstone which helps to insulate the building, reducing the amount of artificial heating and cooling required
• the windows in the four central lightwells and large external windows maximise the available daylight entering the building, minimising the need for artificial lighting.
