Adelaide Street drainage works - Brisbane City

Brisbane City Council is completing essential maintenance works on the stormwater drainage system on Adelaide Street, Brisbane City. We are installing new larger underground pipes to maintain the stormwater infrastructure and amenity in the area. 

Construction is scheduled to start on Friday 21 March 2025, and will occur continuously across 3 ‘super weekends’, from 10pm Friday evening through to 5am Monday morning, weather and site conditions permitting.

About the project

As part of our commitment to maintaining our drainage network system, Council will be undertaking necessary drainage works in Adelaide Street, Brisbane City. As part of these works, we are saw cutting, excavating and trenching, installing a new manhole, and replacing a pipe with a larger diameter and improving the alignment of the pipe.

This project forms part of Council’s long-term commitment to maintain essential drainage infrastructure. These essential maintenance works ensures the drainage infrastructure on Adelaide Street continues to effectively manage stormwater and provides flood resilience for the Adelaide Street catchment area.

Project details

Works on Adelaide Street will start from 10pm Friday and continue until 5am Monday across 3 weekends, from: 

  • Friday 21 to Monday 24 March 2025
  • Friday 4 to Monday 7 April 2025
  • Friday 18 to Monday 21 April 2025.

As part of these works, we will be:

The open trench will be approximately 3.5m deep and 17m in length to accommodate the pipes and will require a larger exclusion zone to support community safety during construction.

Traffic impacts

During the works, Adelaide Street will be closed to through traffic from Edward Street to George Street. Detours will be in place via George Street and Edward Street to direct motorists around the works. 

The road will be patched and reinstated following the works each weekend to ensure safety and traffic conditions can return to normal outside of working hours.

A blue arrow is depicted, starting from the intersection of Adelaide Street and George Street, extending to the east up to Charlotte Street, and then re-connecting to Adelaide Street at the intersection of Edward Street. This line shows an outbound detour bypassing Adelaide Street. 

A green arrow is positioned at the Adelaide Street and Albert Street intersection, situated to the west of the Queen Street Mall. This line depicts that Albert Street and Burnett Lane will remain open during works.

Local access to Queen Street Mall, Albert Street and Burnett Lane will be maintained, with pedestrian and cyclist access available throughout the works. 

Delivery vehicles, business driveway access and entry to King George Car Park via Adelaide Street will be accommodated with assistance from traffic control.

Roma Street access to the King George Square Car Park will be unaffected.

Where necessary, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist motorists through the worksite. Please look for warning signage and follow the direction of traffic controllers.

Public transport 

All bus services along Adelaide Street between Edward and George Streets will be diverted during the works. For service information, please contact Translink by visiting translink.com.au or calling 13 12 30. 

Construction impacts

During construction, residents, and businesses may experience an increase in noise, dust and vehicle movements, with reversing beepers and flashing lights.

Metro construction works

Brisbane Metro are undertaking various construction works near the Adelaide Street drainage works including:

  • tunnelling activities beneath Adelaide Street 
  • works on Adelaide Street between George Street and Edward Street 
  • strengthening and resurfacing activities on Victoria Bridge, and the mobilisation of a barge on the Brisbane River 
  • service installation and civil construction activities on the city side of North Quay and William Street between Ann Street and Elizabeth Street.
