Planned retirement of CityCat vessels

Following the successful delivery of the NextGen CityCat fleet, which are built to modern contemporary standards (including accessibility requirements), planning is now underway for the retirement of some of the fleet’s older First Generation CityCat vessels, which are now surplus to requirements.

Accredited Commercial Vessel Operators are able to register to receive updates on this process.

To register, please provide your company name, contact name and email address to ptoffice@brisbane.qld.gov.au with subject line 'CityCat Gen1 disposal registration'.

The CityCat’s were first launched in 1996 and immediately proved to be a popular and iconic way to traverse the Brisbane River. For the first time, the fleet will be available for sale to accredited operators. The vessels have been carefully maintained and we would like to explore whether we can find a future life for the vessels in service elsewhere.

This process will be run via a maritime broker that will be appointed to act on Council’s behalf. More information on the appointed broker is expected to be made available later in the year. Initially, it is expected that Mirbarpa and Tugulawa will be made available to the market. Both vessels were launched in November 1996. Key vessel particulars are as per the below.
