About the project
In 2021 and 2022, we engaged with the community about a range of treatments on Fifth Avenue and surrounding streets.
The community supported speed platforms, pedestrian splitter islands, kerb build outs, upgraded kerb ramps and associated line marking and lighting in various locations within the precinct.
We have reviewed recent traffic data will be installing the following improvements:
- 3 speed platforms on Fifth Avenue
- 3 speed platforms on Eighth Avenue
- one speed platform on Ninth Avenue
- a pedestrian refuge island and upgraded kerb and kerb ramps on Ninth Avenue at St Leonards Street
- a pedestrian refuge island and upgraded kerb and kerb ramps on Baragoola Street at Sixth Avenue
- a traffic island on Sixth Avenue near Baragoola Street
- associated line marking, including yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines.
On-street parking will not be permitted where yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines are in place to ensure safe sightlines and appropriate visibility at crossing points and intersections, and to ensure lanes are wide enough for traffic to safely pass.
Project benefits
The improvements for the Fifth Avenue precinct will help to address community concerns about the safety of people walking, riding and driving by:
- discouraging non-local traffic
- reducing speeding and corner cutting
- providing safer and more accessible pedestrian crossing points
- increasing sightlines and visibility.
