About the project
This project is part of Council’s Suburban Corridor Modernisation (SCM) program, which focuses on minor works at intersections to improve safety for all road users.
We have already completed the following works on McLennan Street:
- Implemented a speed limit reduction from 60 km/h to 50 km/h.
- Resurfaced the road to improve safety and amenity.
- Undertook footpath repairs and maintenance.
- Reviewed Long Vehicle Detour signage in the area and changed some signs to encourage long vehicles to travel via Lutwyche Road instead of McLennan Street where possible.
The upcoming safety, accessibility and amenity works are the final stage of improvements planned for McLennan Street as part of the SCM program.
These works are based on community support in 2023 and will provide safer and more accessible pedestrian crossings, help to reduce vehicle speeds and improve visibility.
Safety, accessibility and amenity upgrades
Upgrades on McLennan Street will include:
- installing pedestrian refuge splitter islands on Bale Street, Wakefield Street and Grove Street
- upgrading kerb ramps at the new refuge islands on Wakefield Street and Grove Street and at the existing refuge island on Marne Road
- relocating the existing pedestrian refuge on McLennan Street between Conan and Florrie streets to between Conon Street and Marne Road
- installing a new streetlight on McLennan Street near Conan Street, at the relocated pedestrian refuge island
- installing 8 landscaped traffic islands
- completing minor turfing improvements
- painting new line marking, including yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines.
On-street parking will not be permitted in spaces marked with yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines.
Long Vehicle Detour signage changes
We listened to community feedback and reviewed the local road network to determine the suitability of its long vehicle detour signs. In October 2024, we changed some signs in an effort to help reduce long vehicle traffic on McLennan Street, including:
- changing the existing sign on Kedron Park Road to direct long vehicles to Albion Road via Lutwyche Road
- changing the existing sign on Bridge Street, to direct long vehicles to Albion Road via Lutwyche Road.
As the Bridge Street overpass is unsuitable for long vehicles, the existing signs on Chalk Street are required to remain and direct long vehicles to McLennan Street as the remaining suitable route.
