About the project
Brisbane City Council upgraded the Wynnum Road and Southgate Avenue intersection in Cannon Hill to improve safety for all road users.
Prior to the upgrade, between 2017 and 2021, there were 11 reported crashes at the Wynnum Road and Southgate Avenue intersection in Cannon Hill, 4 of which resulted in hospitalisation. Almost half of the crashes involved road users failing to give way when turning right from Wynnum Road into Southgate Avenue.
To improve safety and reduce the crash risk at this intersection, the upgrade included reconfiguring the traffic signal phasing to provide a fully controlled right turn for road users travelling from Wynnum Road into Southgate Avenue.
The right-turn pocket on Wynnum Road will be extended to increase capacity. To cater for this, the eastbound and westbound lanes on Wynnum Road have been realigned.
A new pedestrian crossing has been installed on the left-turn slip lane into Southgate Avenue, as well as improvements to the on-road cycle lanes. This safety upgrade forms part of Council’s plans to make Brisbane roads safer.
The project will now enter a maintenance period where minor defects and maintenance will be carried out.
The project was funded by the Australian Government as part of the 2024-25 Black Spot Program.
