Project introduction

About the project

Between 2017 and 2021, there were 11 reported crashes at the Wynnum Road and Southgate Avenue intersection in Cannon Hill, 4 of which resulted in hospitalisation. Almost half of the crashes involved road users failing to give way when turning right from Wynnum Road into Southgate Avenue.

To improve safety and reduce the crash risk at this intersection, we plan to reconfigure the traffic signal phasing to provide a fully controlled right turn for road users travelling from Wynnum Road into Southgate Avenue.

The right-turn pocket on Wynnum Road will be extended to increase capacity. To cater for this, the eastbound and westbound lanes on Wynnum Road will be realigned.

A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on the left-turn slip lane into Southgate Avenue, as well as improvements to the on-road cycle lanes.

Works will also include reconstructing kerb ramps, upgrading drainage, installing new kerb, signage and line marking to suit the realigned intersection layout.

Project benefits

  • Improve safety for all road users by fully controlling the right-turn movement from Wynnum Road into Southgate Avenue and providing split phasing for the traffic on both side roads.
  • Improve safety for pedestrians and vulnerable road users with the installation of a new pedestrian crossing.
  • Improve intersection operation.
  • Improve travel time reliability for general traffic and public and active transport through the area.
