Project introduction

About the project

The Illaweena Street improvements project includes constructing a new car park with 54 car parking spaces on Illaweena Street.

The project also includes changes at the Gowan Road intersection to improve traffic flow at peak times. These features include extending the right-turn pocket on Illaweena Street to increase capacity, reconfiguring the signal phasing and installing no stopping lines on Illaweena Street to improve traffic flow through the intersection.

As part of these works, we will:

  • construct a car park with 54 designated parking bays, with full access into the car park from Illaweena Street and left-out access (eastbound)
  • extend the right-turn pocket on Illaweena Street to increase capacity at the intersection with Gowan Road
  • install a new traffic island in the centre of Illaweena Street and yellow no stopping lines on the northern and southern side of Illaweena Street
  • install a new section of path linking the new car park to Gowan Road to provide connectivity to Stretton State College Primary Campus

Please see the project plan linked below.

Environmental impacts

As part of the project, 10 trees within the school oval will need to be removed. Some replanting will take place within the local area, in line with Council’s commitment to keep our suburbs cooler, shadier and greener.

Benefits

  • Provide safe and accessible carparking for parents and carers of students attending Stretton State Primary Campus.
  • Improve safe access into and out of the formalised car park.
  • Increase efficiency and travel time reliability during peak periods at the Illaweena Street and Gowan Road.

What works are coming up?

Works to construct the car park will start during the school holidays, in April 2025, weather and site conditions permitting. Initial works will include establishing the work zone on the verge along Illaweena Street, tree removal works and service relocations.

Parking

From term 2, informal parking on the verge of Illaweena Street adjacent to the school oval will be unavailable.

Yellow no stopping lines will be installed on both sides of Illaweena Street (between the fauna land bridge and Gowan Road). Student drop off will not be permitted in this area.

Please allow some additional time when travelling through the area.

More information about construction timeframes and impacts will be shared with the community ahead of term 2 starting.

Funding

This project is jointly funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program and Brisbane City Council.
